What is Meze?

“Meze” is a term commonly used in Turkish cuisine and generally in Mediterranean cuisine. Meze refers to small, tasty snacks consumed before or alongside the main meal. Typically, a variety of mezes are served together on the table and consumed before or alongside the main course. Mezes include various dishes such as olive oil-based appetizers, dips and sauces like yogurt and hummus, seafood, vegetables, cheeses, and halal meats.

The origin of the word “meze” is derived from the Arabic word “mazza,” meaning “flavor” or “something tasty.” For people in the Mediterranean region, meze is a social ritual shared before or during meals. It serves as a symbol of hospitality and sharing, enhancing the experience of gathering, conversing, and eating together.

In Mediterranean culture, particularly in Turkish, Greek, and Arab cuisines, meze often comprises a variety of delicious snacks that may share similarities but also exhibit cultural diversity. This provides an enjoyable dining experience for those gathered and is traditionally associated with tolerance, generosity, and friendship.
